Gerlel Z, Szlavik J, Banhegyi D, Miskovits E; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12; 10: 246 (abstract no. PC0346).

Laszlo Hosp., Dept. of Immunology, Budapest, Hungary.

OBJECTIVE: Survey on the knowledge and attitude of recruits and prisoners to HIV/AIDS in different regions of Hungary. METHODS: Before information, anonymous questionnaires were filled in by the audience with the aim of getting information about the basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS. RESULTS: The anonymous questionnaires were filled in by 97% of soldiers and 86% of prisoners. Responses of 875 soldiers from 20 garrisons and of 620 prisoners from 10 prisons were evaluated. Mean age of soldiers was 21.2 years and that of prisoners 38.4 years. 8% and 5% of respondents reported homosexual contact and 0.65% and 2.5% i.v. drug use at least once in his life. 16% of soldiers and 25% of prisoners have not heard of AIDS and 44%, 25% had correct knowledge of HIV transmission, respectively. 80% and 60% of respondents fear getting AIDS, while 56% of soldiers and 50% of prisoners think they are not at risk or at low risk. CONCLUSIONS: Soldiers have more knowledge on HIV/AIDS than prisoners, however giving information should be continued in Hungarian schools, garrisons and prisons.
