Forest Service Invites Public to Plan Revision Workshops

South Lake Tahoe, CA. --The Forest Service invites the public to help plan the future of National Forest System lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The agency will host two public workshops--September 29 on the North Shore and September 30 on the South Shore--to kick off the latest round of public input on the forest plan for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).

More than 80 percent of the Lake Tahoe Basin is managed by the Forest Service on behalf of the American public. The LTBMU Forest Plan provides overall direction for these lands. The LTBMU's current plan is 20 years old. While much of it is still relevant, several areas require updating to reflect current conditions and policies, new science and changing technologies. The Forest Service has identified ecosystem restoration, recreation management, land use, and planning and adaptive management as among the key areas requiring revision.

The workshops will begin with a presentation on the current status of forest plan revision, including the legal and regulatory frameworks that the Forest Service must work within. Forest Service staff will describe how the 2008 Planning Rule will change the look of the forest plan and how the Pathway process and other public input to date has already influenced proposed plan revisions.

The second half of each workshop will consist of a facilitated discussion on forest management issues to identify key areas where additional public input would be helpful. The outcome of these first workshops will help shape a second series of meetings in October and November that will focus on specific topics. Possible topics include forest structure and health, watershed management, and recreation management.

The North Shore workshop will run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, September 29, at the North Tahoe Conference Center in Kings Beach, 8318 North Lake Blvd. The South Shore workshop will run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 30, in the Emerald Bay Room at the Forest Supervisor's Office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. Light refreshments will be served.
