Amazona- Associacao de Prevencao a Aids, Joao Pessoa, Brazil

BACKGROUND: In March of 2001, AMAZONA begins a work of prevention from STD and AIDS with 6 communities affording low income in Joao Pessoa - PB. A check up, with the aim of identifying the attitudes and practices of these communities as well as their social and economical situation, was done. METHODOLOGY: A study was done with 6 communities making use of a rate of 200 people that represents an amount of 25000 inhabitants. Data were acquired through a questionnaire by a team of 23 researchers from the researched community who passed through a capacity process. RESULTS: .1.170 people aged around 30 years were interviewed, where 45% were men and 55% women. 70% of those are housekeepers whose average family consists of 5 people; .83% of population is aged below 19 years; 84% of the youngs aged between 13 and 18 years attend school, where 11% are economically active; .17% of population is aged above 19 years and among those, 41% are illiterate and 42% have not finished elementary school. Among the adults 50% have any kind of economical activity and only 10% study; .70% of the families have an income below 2 national incomes (R$ 352,00) about US$ 144,00, which adds an average income of R$ 57,00, about US$ 23,00; .26% of the women and 16% of the men who were interviewed have already had gleet and of those, 91% have already looked for medical help, where 86% were attended on the community first-aid station; Only 27% of the interviewed people cannot describe properly what AIDS is and this is the same form both men and women. CONCLUSIONS: The work to be developed will be more focused on strategies of behavior changes. Data may vary from community to community since the prevention actions to DST and AIDS take under consideration the traits of each community. AIDS preventing actions may be inserted in a wider context taking under consideration all the social and economical factors of the community, suggesting professional capacity activities.
