Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, released the following statement today in response to statements from Iraqi Defense Minister Abdul Qadir that the U.S. should stay in Iraq until 2018. The Defense Minister said that Iraqi government would not be able to defend its own borders until at least 2018.
“The Iraqi Defense Minister’s alarming comments confirm what I heard this summer in Baghdad when General Petraeus told me that the U.S. would be in Iraq for another 8 to 10 years. As we prepare to enter the fifth year of the war, nearly 4,000 U.S. troops have been killed, 29,000 U.S. troops have been injured and $800 billion has been spent in Iraq. It’s unfathomable what the war could cost us if it were to continue for another ten years. Fortunately, President Bush will not be in office to continue his failed policies in Iraq after next January. In the meantime, the Democratic-led Congress remains committed to ending this war and bringing our troops home. The war has gone on long enough and we don’t need another 10 years to figure out that it was a mistake. The American people and the majority in Congress are done with this tragic war.”
