Wildland Fire

Suppression of wildland fires on the Kootenai National Forest is the responsibility of the U.S. Forest Service, Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation and the Volunteer Fire Departments within the Forest boundary. By cooperating and working together these organizations suppress an average of 145 wildland fires a year totaling an average of 6400 acres. In addition to suppressing the fires on the Kootenai National Forest, local firefighters are used to help surrounding forests and available for suppression needs throughout the contiguous United States and in Alaska.

The Kootenai National Forest hires many seasonal firefighters during the fire season. To learn more about seasonal and permanent fire fighting jobs visit the Washington office web page and for a list of available jobs visit USA Jobs for fire fighting vacancies.
