NHEERL Scientists Play Major Role in Coordinating PFAA Days II Workshop on EPA-RTP Campus

PFAA Days II was an ORD-sponsored workshop held June 3-5 at EPA’s Research Triangle Park (RTP) campus to highlight ORD’s progress and recent discoveries, to identify its current needs and priorities to support health risk assessment by the program offices, and to chart a future course for perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) research at ORD. PFAAs, such as perflurooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate, are persistent environmental pollutants that are of considerable interest to EPA, as well as to the public. Over the past several years, investigators from NHEERL, the National Center for Computational Toxicology, the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL), and the National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) have developed research programs to characterize the toxicity of these chemicals, to explore their modes of action, to develop analytical methods for their detection in various media, and to investigate the fate and transport of these chemicals in the environment. Collectively, significant research progress has been made. Regarding PFAA Days II, in addition to presentations by ORD researchers, several prominent and active investigators working on exposure and toxicity issues of PFAAs were invited to share their most recent findings. Others working in this area presented their findings at a poster session. The informal meetings on June 3 and 4 were open to everyone from EPA, as well as to scientists from other Federal and State agencies, the chemical industry, and academia. A separate session on June 5 was reserved for EPA scientists and managers to determine the remaining research needs and a path to address them. This workshop was organized by Elaine Francis (National Program Director); Doug Wolf, Chris Lau (chair), John Rogers, and Barbara Abbott of NHEERL; Andy Lindstrom of NERL; Marc Mills of NRMRL; and Jennifer Seed and Cathy Fehrenbacher of the Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances.
