Background: Bars have been shown to be risky context in a number of cultures and social settings. Is this also a risky context in China? Formative work from qualitative interviews on social networks in China has identified several activity settings. This study examines these leisure activities and the extent to which the activities are related to risky sexual behaviors. Methods: Data were collected during a pilot assessment in March 2002, conducted in an Eastern costal city in China. A total of 209 stall attendants from 5 grocery markets were recruited, with a two-stage sampling process. Survey questionnaires were administered using a face-to-face personal interview. Results: Among the six activity settings, going to karaoke bars or nightclubs is the only venue that was significantly associated with multiple sexual partners. Also, frequenting karaoke bar/night club was significantly related to being male, single, younger, and more educated. Controlling for age and education, logistic regression analys es revealed that those participants who reported multiple partners in the past year were 15 times more likely to visit karaoke bars or nightclubs than those with single partner. Male participants were 8 times as their female counterparts to report going to such places. Conclusions: Variations in risk often depend on where the free time spent. Understanding social and cultural contexts of risk behaviors is essential for implementing HIV intervention and its evaluations. Visiting karaoke bars or nightclubs appear significantly related to multiple sexual partners, suggesting that karaoke bars, massage centers or nightclubs should be considered as cultural contexts for study risky behaviors in China.
