OBJECTIVES: To determine the predictive factors for survival in Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS). METHODS AND PATIENTS: We reviewed the hospital records of 200 patients with KS associated with AIDS, diagnosed in 8 hospitals of Madrid from 1984 to April-1992. Survival curves were plotted according to the Kaplan-Meier method. Difference in survival was compared using log-rank test. RESULTS: The overall median survival was 15 months (range: 0-55), with a three years survival probability of 17%. The factors associated with a negative impact on survival were: B symptoms (p < 0.001); III-IV stages (UCLA) (p < 0.001); pulmonary or gastrointestinal involvement (p < 0.05); hemoglobin < 10 g/dl (p < 0.001); leukocytes < 5500/mm3 (p < 0.01); CD4 lymphocytes < 400/mm3; CD8 lymphocytes < 800/mm3 (p < 0.01) and LDH > 500 UI/L (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The survival of patients with Kaposi's Sarcoma associated with AIDS, is short. The factors related to poor survival are: advanced stages, B symptoms, visceral involvement, anemia, leukopenia, CD4 depletion and increase of LDH.
