SUBJECT: STAFF REQUIREMENTS - PERIODIC BRIEFING ON NEW REACTOR ISSUES, 1:00 P.M., WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008, COMMISSIONERS’ CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by an industry panel and the staff on the status of new reactor issues.  The industry panel provided an overview of the current process highlighting technical and policy issues and industry priorities.  The staff panel discussed accomplishments and recent activities including the status of new reactor projects and rulemaking and selected safety and environmental technical issues and potential schedule impacts.

The staff should keep the public informed of their opportunities to participate in the process as the staff looks for efficiencies in the design certification review and rulemaking process.

The staff should seek stakeholder involvement in the development of Interim Staff Guidance on implementation of the Limited Work Authorization rule.

The ACRS should advise the staff and Commission on the adequacy of the design basis long-term core cooling approach for each new reactor design based, as appropriate, on either its review of the design certification or the first license application referencing the reactor design.
