OBJECTIVE: Since AIDS is or should be an important concern for young people all over the world, this study wants to find out the amount of knowledge about AIDS/HIV-infection in the very international and mobile group of young Esperanto-speakers. METHODS: Each participant of the 49th International Esperanto-Youth-Congress (Vraca, BG, aug. 1993) received a questionnaire about AIDS/HIV-infection. The following groups of questions were asked: 1) country, age and sufficiency of information material (mother tongue and Esperanto); 2) general knowledge about AIDS/HIV-infection; 3) modes of infection; 4) private concern and prejudices. RESULTS: We received 154 valid questionnaires. 1) 65% indicated to have received enough information in their respective mother tongues, 63% wanted or needed such material in Esperanto; 2) Nearly half showed inadequate general knowledge; 3) A great majority mentioned sexual (92%), blood or other body fluid (81%) contacts, a great minority drugs (13%) and pregnancy (3%); 4) Only a minority (30%) felt private concern and nearly 20% had strong prejudices. CONCLUSION: This study gives first insights into the knowledge about AIDS/HIV-infection and the behaviour consequences among young Esperanto-speakers. It shows that information material is necessary in Esperanto. There remains a wide field for further investigations, for example, in gay Esperantists or in countries with poor information. A following information campaigne provided with material in Esperanto would be useful and relatively easy to organize.
