Student Art Competition Announced (Posted 5/11/2007)

The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Indian Education is pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 Native American Student Art Competition, Education: A Gift Without Boundaries. The student response to this year’s competition was impressive. With 1379 outstanding entries from 34 states including Alaska we thank all of the students and community members who contributed to the competition, demonstrating the value of culture, the arts, and academic achievement to Native youth. Congratulations go to the winners as well as the numerous other students whose submissions made this year’s judging exciting and challenging.

2007 National Indian Education Study (NIES) Part 1 (Posted 3/30/2007)

On behalf of the Office of Indian Education, U.S. Department of Education, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) will conduct the 2007 National Indian Education Study (NIES) MS Word (25 KB) . The study, which is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2007, is intended to describe the condition of education for American Indian/Alaska Native students in the United States. The 2007 NIES will collect a larger sample of 4th and 8th grade students resulting in a better understanding of AI/AN student performance in mathematics and reading. Results of Part I of the 2005 study, based on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), set a baseline for the 21st century reading and mathematics performance of AI/AN 4th and 8th grade students. Part II of the study is an Indian Education Survey, which asks AI/AN students, their teachers, and school principals about the inclusion of native languages and cultural perspectives in the curriculum and about interactions between the school and the AI/AN community.
