(July 24, 2008) Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) discusses public health issues, including newborn screening, with participants in the Emerging Leaders Health Institute. The institute utilizes a community-centered approach to emphasize the importance of mobilizing Latina and Latino communities at-large to reduce health disparities and promote wellness. The institute provides young Latinas, ages 18-25, with the opportunity to serve as a resource to other young people and community organizations; build their own leadership capacity in health promotion and prevention; and promote the National Latina Health Network. As the institute’s parent organization, the network is a non-profit organization that addresses critical health concerns affecting Latinas and their families.
