(May 9, 2008) East Los Angeles – Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) accepted a “Heroes Award” on behalf of her father, the late Congressman Edward Roybal, who was honored along with other community leaders at the Heroes Gala at the grand dedication of the East Los Angeles Civic Center campus. The awards were presented by County Supervisor Gloria Molina.
The East Los Angeles Center is located at 4801 E. Third St., just west of Atlantic Boulevard. It includes the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station, the East Los Angeles Library, the East Los Angeles Courthouse and the Edward R. Roybal Comprehensive Health Center, as well as part of Belvedere Park, including a lake and amphitheater. All of which are operated by Los Angeles County. It is also the future home of the Dionicio Morales Transit Plaza, which will be the next-to-last stop on the Edward R. Roybal Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension when it is completed sometime next year. The Civic Center was planned in partnership with East Los Angeles residents, civic leaders, the local artist community and business owners through a series of community planning meetings that began in 1999.
In addition to the late Congressman Roybal, the other honorees included: Esteban Torres; Dolores Huerta (pictured); Edward James Olmos; Oscar De La Hoya; Antonia Hernandez; Anthony Quinn; the late Cesar Chavez; the late Sister Karen Boccalero.
The congresswoman made the following remarks at the ceremony: “I would like to congratulate the community of East Los Angeles and Supervisor Gloria Molina on this wonderful accomplishment. The transformation of the East Los Angeles Civic Center and the memories guarded here stand as testimony to the hard work and sacrifice of the past, but even more importantly, the hard work that lies ahead. It is an honor to accept this award on behalf of my father. He was a man of incredible courage and relentless commitment to public service. Thank you all very much for your support and your commitment to the East Los Angeles community.”
