Work after early retirement: An increasing trend among men

Diane E. Herz
Economist, Division of Labor Force Statistics, Bureau of Labor Statistics

Despite essentially flat labor force participation rates for men aged 50 years and older during the past decade, early pensioners returned to work at increasing rates from 1984 to 1993. This article examines the employment status of men 50 years and older, using a preferred method of analysis where trends in retirement ages and work after retirement are investigated. Working retirees profile here are those workers who receive pensions but continue working.
