Chestnut Mtn. Shooting Range

The area is open Monday through Saturday, sunup to sundown. Closed all day Sunday. Open during daylight hours depending on season of year. Hours are posted at range. A fee is required.

From Clayton go north on 441 for 5 miles. Turn right at Rabun Gap Post Office (Kelly Creek Road). Go 1 mile and turn right on Darnell Creek Road. Follow road for 4 miles to firing range. Map it.

The Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division provides information about the shooting ranges they operate in Wildlife Managment Areas.

Shooting Range Rules

* SHOOT YOUR FIREARM IN A SAFE MANNER. Always point the muzzle of your firearm in a safe direction.

* ALL FIREARMS MUST BE IN A SAFE CONDITION (action open and unloaded) WHEN ENTERING OR EXITING THE RANGE. Load firearms only when you are at the firing line, downrange is clear and you are ready to shoot.

* SHOOT ONLY FROM THE FIRING LINE, DOWNRANGE, AT TARGETS MOUNTED BETWEEN THE ORANGE RANGE POLES.

* CHECK WITH THE OTHER SHOOTERS TO BE SURE THAT ALL FIREARMS ARE UNLOADED AND GROUNDED (laid down) BEFORE ANYONE GOES DOWN RANGE. Do not handle any firearms at this time. Shooters must use the walkways to and from the targets.

* USE STATIONARY PAPER TARGETS ONLY. No bottles, cans, or other breakable targets may be used. Skeet shooting is prohibited.

* NO TACER OR INCENDIARY TYPE AMMUNITION ALLOWED.

* SHOOTERS MAY SHOOT ONLY AT THE TARGET RANGE IN LINE WITH THEIR POSITION. No shooting across the range. For example, persons located at the 100 yard benches shoot only at 100 yard target position.

* SHOOTERS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.

* NO SPECTATORS ALLOWED AT THE SHOOTING BENCHES ON THE FIRING LINE WHILE SHOOTING OCCURS.

* IF OTHERS ARE WAITING TO SHOOT, TIME WILL BE LIMITED TO ONE (l) HOUR PER SHOOTER.

* PROPERLY DISPOSE OF ALL LITTER.
