COTS/ONR Fall 2004 Workshop
On November 16-17, 2004 a workshop was held in Charleston, SC for recipients
of the Coastal Observation Technology System (COTS) and Office of Naval
Research (ONR) coastal and ocean observing awards as well as representatives
from each of the nascent Regional Associations (RAs). The primary goals
for the workshop were to 1) Enhance the coordination, especially data
integration, among recipients and other collaborators; 2) Review guidance
for FY05 proposal preparation; 3) Discuss the strategic outlook for
COTS/ONR partners and an Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS).
There was also discussion on the Data Management and Communications
(DMAC) Committee guidance document, how COTS and ONR partners’
data can be made available via appropriate portals, as well as how to
move ahead with the data portal that was initiated at the “interoperability”
forum in DC last fall (www.openioos.org). The National Data Buoy Center
(NDBC) and the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services
(CO-OPS) are working with the Coastal Services Center on ways to provide
data QA/QC and distribution services to COTS and ONR partners. NDBC
and CO-OPS also participated in the workshop.
