Chapter Three: Amendatory Legislation Since 1936

For years the National Park Service managed the Whitman National Monument without any other legislation than the 1936 Act of Congress (49 Stat. 2028). It became obvious by 1952, however, that to provide for the Park's changing needs and future objectives, amendatory legislation was required. The ensuing legislation resulted in both positive and significant change.

GGNRA owns two of these rare, wood-frame shacks, built in 1906 to shelter survivors of the famous San Francisco earthquake. Now located at the Presidio, these shacks once comprised 24 city blocks and at peak occupancy, housed a total of 16,448 refugees.
