Agencies complete comprehensive environmental study of Snake River Plain Aquifer beneath DOE’s Idaho Site; meetings scheduled |
|
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and the State of Idaho have completed an environmental study of
the Snake River Plain Aquifer beneath DOE's Idaho Site, which concludes
groundwater leaving the Site boundary will continue to be safe for
domestic and agricultural uses.

The agencies began the investigation -- called the Operable Unit
10-08 remedial investigation/feasibility study -- in 2004 to determine
if contaminated plumes in the Snake River Plain Aquifer beneath the Site
could join together (or commingle) to cause an unacceptable risk to
people or the environment. Monitoring data from the investigation show
that offsite populations will continue to remain safe from contaminants
present in the aquifer today.
The study also investigated 83 surface sites for potential
contamination. None of the sites pose a threat to groundwater, but two
sites require cleanup. The two sites requiring cleanup contain lead,
arsenic or mercury. Because Operable Unit 10-08 is intended to be the
last Record of Decision for DOE’s Idaho Site, a process is proposed for
addressing any contamination that may be discovered later. If the new
site is similar to a site that has already been cleaned up, the same
remedy could be used again.
A Proposed Plan is available electronically at
https://idaho cleanupproject.com/Portals/0/documents/MiscSites_PP_final.pdf or can be requested by calling (800)
708-2680. A 30-day public comment period runs through October 15, 2008.
Public meetings to discuss the proposed plan will be held in Idaho Falls
(Sept. 29 at the Shilo Inn) and Twin Falls (Sept. 30 at the College of
Southern Idaho’s Taylor Student Union Building). Both meetings will take
place from 6 to 8 p.m.
For further information, the public can access Operable Unit 10-08
documents in the Administrative Record at
http://ar.inel.gov. The Administrative Record is also located at the INL
Technical Library in Idaho Falls and the Albertson Library on the campus
of Boise State University. |
