U.S. Department of Labor offers Virginia Beach-area daycare professionals free workshop addressing career development, on-the-job tips and labor laws

Registration now underway for May 10 program at Virginia Beach Central Library

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division will host “Focus on Daycare 2007,” a workshop for daycare professionals, on Thursday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT at the Virginia Beach Central Library, 4100 Beach Blvd. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

“Focus on Daycare 2007 will provide daycare professionals with invaluable information on career development, as well as federal employment laws workplaces are required to follow,” said Bruce Clark, district director of the Wage and Hour Division’s Richmond District Office.

In addition to representatives of the Wage and Hour Division, the program will feature a panel of experts in childhood development and early childhood education. Specifically, topics will include medication administration training, staff burnout, child care career development, creative activities for children and the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The workshop is free and open to the public. Interested individuals should register by May 1 to reserve spaces. Late registrations will be accepted on a space available basis. For more information or to register, call (757) 441-3490, ext. 25.

The FLSA requires that covered employees be paid at least the federal minimum wage and one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for hours worked beyond 40 per week. The law also requires that employers maintain accurate records of employees’ wages, hours and other conditions of employment.

The Wage and Hour Division is responsible for administering and enforcing some of the nation’s most comprehensive labor laws. For more information, call the Department of Labor’s toll-free help line at (866) 4US-WAGE (487-9243). Information is also available on the Internet at www.wagehour.dol.gov.
