Scottsboro, Ala., sign manufacturer pays more than $9,000 for youth employment violation following investigation by U.S. Labor Department

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tennessee Valley Sign & Printing, Scottsboro, Ala., has paid $9,652 in civil money penalties for allowing a minor to work in violation of the youth employment provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) following an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division.

Wage and Hour Investigators found that a teenage worker who was seriously injured on the job performed hazardous duties as defined by federal regulations.

“Young workers can learn valuable skills when they enter the job market, but employers must ensure that teens have safe work experiences that do not expose them to hazardous duties,” said Oliver Peebles III, district director of the Wage and Hour Division’s Birmingham District Office.

Investigators determined that the 17-year-old was injured while operating a punch press used to cut steel rods. The department’s youth employment regulations identify 17 hazardous occupations prohibited for workers under the age of 18, including operations of power-driven metal forming, punching and shearing machines.

For more compliance information about youth employment laws and jobs prohibited under the secretary of labor’s hazardous duty orders, visit the department’s YouthRules! Web site atwww.youthrules.dol.gov.
