Horse-Friendly Campgrounds on Dolores Public Lands

Burro Bridge Campground

Two miles past Dunton on Forest Road #535 is Burro Bridge Campground. A corral is next to two campsites. Two bays can accommodate one horse each. In the summer of 2006 Burro Bridge Trail will be completed. This trail will connect the campground with the Groundhog Stock Driveway in the Lizard Head Wilderness.

Transfer Campground

Located 10 miles northeast of Mancos. Take Colorado Highway 184 north for ¼ mile and turn east on the West Mancos Road (Forest Rd. 561). Go about 10 miles (most is unpaved with a gravel surface). Livestock are not allowed in the main campground. Do not turn into the main campground. Stay on #561 for 600 feet past the main campground entrance. There are corrals on the left side of the road and five camping sites next to the corrals.

Target Tree Campground

Target Tree Campground is 7 miles east of Mancos on the north side of Highway 160. There is a horse trail that connects the campground to the Railroad Grade (FS Road #568). There are two pull-thru’s for horse trailers and numerous spots to pull over. A water trough is available near the trailhead.
