American Movie Star Visits the LWM
American actor Soren Fulton visited the LWM July 22-26 to see leprosy first hand.
Soren has been donating to American Leprosy Missions for almost 10 years. He has
stared in several films including "The Thunderbirds". Soren has a keen interest in
seeing a vaccine for leprosy fully developed so wanted to see the research being done
in Cebu. Soren lives in Southern California with his family.  (see photo below)
IDEAL WORKSHOP MEETS IN CEBU
The LWM hosted the most recent meeting of the IDEAL Consortium in Cebu from
December 15-18. Thirty scientists from around the world met to discuss progress in
developing new diagnostic tests for leprosy and to improve collaboration amongst
various laboratories. The IDEAL project is being funded by the Heiser Foundation and
the Turing Foundaion in partnership with the Netherlands Leprosy Relief.

LWM Celebrates 80 years of Service
This year the LWM celebrates its 80th Anniversary. The LWM was begun in 1928 and
was dedicated to the memorial of General Leonard Wood, who was the first Governor
General of the Philippines to take an interest in the plight of leprosy patients. A
celebration will take place in Cebu in October.

Cebu Skin Clinic (CSC) Serves Over 8,200 Patients Last Year
The CSC in Cebu City did more than 8,200 skin consultations in 2007 and diagnosed
173 new cases of leprosy. The CSC serves mostly the poor population of the City of
Cebu and surrounding areas. The staff serve patients on a daily basis in the clinic as
well as travel out doing field visits in patient homes. Of the 173 new cases of leprosy,
15  were children. The CSC also has 854 patients enrolled in leprosy related studies.

New Assistant Director for LWM Cebu

Dr. Marivic Balagon has been appointed the new Assistant Director for the Leonard
Wood Memorial, Cebu. The appointment was made as of January 1, 2008 by President
and CEO, Christopher J. Doyle. Dr. Balagon has been with the LWM since October,
1990. Since 2006 she has been the Chief of the Cebu Skin Clinic. Dr. Balagon has
extensive experience in Dermatology, Leprosy Research, and Leprosy Control
programs. She has authored and co-authored numerous papers. We welcome her to
the LWM Senior Leadership Team.
