If I receive benefits before full retirement age, how much are they reduced?
  Question
If I receive benefits before full retirement age, how much are they reduced?
  Answer
It depends on your date of birth. If you were born 1937 or earlier, the reduction is .555 per month or 20 percent at age 62. For dates of birth after 1937, we recommend that you see The Full Retirement Age is Increasing for detailed information on how the retirement age is changing and how that will affect the amount of reduction if you elect benefits before full retirement age. You can file for retirement benefits online.
