Healthy KidsBroward County Public Schools (BCPS) in Florida receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to implement an asthma management program, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The purpose of the BCPS Asthma Management program is to expand and strengthen the capacity of the school district to plan, implement, and evaluate asthma education and management programs as a component of the district’s Coordinated School Health Initiative. The goals of the BCPS HIV/AIDS prevention education program are to educate school staff about HIV prevention; review and revise HIV-related policies, procedures, and curricula; collaborate with community-based and governmental agencies to build capacity for effective delivery of HIV prevention education; and continuously evaluate the impact of the HIV prevention education program.

Broward County's Program In Action

Asthma Management

  • Implementing a comprehensive, culturally competent, age appropriate, results-driven asthma education and awareness training program to educate staff, students, and parents about asthma management and emergency response.

  • Reviewing and revising policies, procedures, curriculum guidelines, and program implementation strategies to support the continued delivery of asthma education and asthma management strategies.

  • Developing and expanding relationships with community partners to promote and expand asthma management among students, parents, and other stakeholders.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing HIV/AIDS/STD prevention and coordinated school health education training to staff, students, parents, and community members.

  • Enhancing HIV curricula, policies, and procedures for use in BCPS.

  • Strengthening and expanding interagency activities in collaboration with community agencies to implement HIV/AIDS/STD and hepatitis education programs for high-risk youth and families.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Broward County students in grades 9–12.

  • Developing and publishing a YRBS data report to summarize the health risk behaviors of students in Broward County.

  • Distributing the YRBS data report to school board members, area superintendents, school administrators, teachers, social workers, school counselors, and community-based organizations working with youth.
