Public Meeting To Address Agenda Items for the 39th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene of the Codex Alimentarius Commission

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20, 2007 - The Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions to be discussed at the 39th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), to be held in Delhi, India, Oct. 30 to Nov. 4, 2007.

The public meeting will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the conference room at the south end of the cafeteria located in the South Agriculture Building, USDA, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. Pre-registration is not required, however, attendees must present a photo identification to gain admittance to the building. Agenda items and documents related to the 39th Session of the CCFH will be available prior to the public meeting at www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp.

Agenda items to be discussed during the public meeting will include matters referred to the committee on food hygiene from the other Codex bodies, proposed draft code of hygienic practice for powdered formulae for infants and young children, proposed draft guidelines for the validation of food safety control measures, microbiological criteria for Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods, a discussion paper on the proposed draft guidelines for the control of Campylobacter and Salmonella spp. in broiler (young bird) chicken meat, principles and guidelines for the conduct of microbiological risk management: Annex II: Guidance on microbiological risk management metrics and discussion of the report of the ad hoc Working Group for establishment of CCFH work priorities.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations. The Codex Committee on Food Hygiene was established to elaborate codes, standards and related texts for food hygiene.
