PALLONE ANNOUNCES FIREFIGHTER GRANTS

FOR SOUTH AMBOY AND MATAWAN

Long Branch, NJ --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today announced the South Amboy Fire Department has been awarded a $249,060 federal grant and the Matawan Fire Department will receive a $226,460 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grants.

Both South Amboy and Matawan were awarded the federal grants after successfully going through a competitive grant process where they had to show fire service experts that their requests would best address the grant program's goals.

During the 2006 Fiscal Year, DHS Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program will award $485 million directly to fire departments and EMS organizations to enhance their response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public.

"Both South Amboy and Matawan have shown their dedication to protecting both the health of the public and their own firefighters by successfully applying for this federal grant," Pallone said.  "These funds can now be used to address critical needs that would otherwise go unmet."

According to DHS, the grants can be used to fund training, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, health and safety modifications to stations and facilities, and firefighting vehicles.
