PALLONE CALLS ON STATE UTILITIES BOARD TO INVESTIGATE JCP&L STRIKE

Receives assurances board will conduct a "thorough review"

Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today called on the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to investigate allegations of illegal asset transfers by JCP&L. During discussions with BPU officials, the New Jersey congressman received assurances the board will conduct a thorough review of JCP&L's activities.

Pallone's request follows statements by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1289 that FirstEnergy has moved vehicles and construction equipment paid for by New Jersey ratepayer dollars to Ohio, an action that is illegal under state law.

"I was approached by members of IBEW Local 1289 and they requested my assistance in addressing their concerns with the state utilities board," Pallone said. "Given the critical nature of these allegations, I agree that there is an immediate need for a state investigation.

"BPU assured me that it would conduct a thorough review of this matter," Pallone continued. "If ratepayers in our state foot the bill for utility trucks or equipment, they deserve to know that those assets benefit the people of New Jersey, not Ohio."

Last month, Pallone called on JCP&L to end the strike, stating that the company's position on healthcare costs was "unreasonable" and should be taken off the negotiating table. Negotiations remain at a standstill.
