Waste Minimization and the
Resource Conservation Challenge

Welcome to the Region 6 homepage for Waste Minimization and Resource Conservation Challenge programs!

Meet our Team!

Resource Conservation Challenge

The Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC) is a national effort to conserve our valuable natural resources and energy by managing materials more efficiently. By focusing on waste reduction and energy recovery activities, the RCC will improve public health and the environment. Today the RCC is expanding across programs - waste, water, air, toxics, pollution prevention, pesticides, and compliance - and also includes activities in the Regions, States, and Tribes. The RCC identifies areas of program focus, or "challenges" that are ready for voluntary partnerships. Each of these challenges works to resolve national environmental problems by finding environmentally acceptable solutions.

A Challenge to all Americans

The RCC challenges all Americans - makers of goods, sellers of goods, and buyers of goods to:

The RCC Team works actively across the Agency to implement RCC projects and promote resource conservation. The Pollution Prevention and Resource Conservation STEER Committee is a joint effort to prevent pollution and reduce and recycle municipal solid and hazardous waste. Visit the Committee home page.

Waste Minimization and Materials Management

Waste is lost material, lost product, and lost profit. Waste minimization can reduce these losses while improving your bottom line and the environment. As part of the RCC, the EPA has developed National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) to focus on the source reduction, recycling, and improved materials management of hazardous chemicals.

National Waste Minimization Partnership Program Logo This voluntary program encourages results by publicly recognizing and showcasing activities that reduce, recycle, or more efficiently use hazardous chemicals, in particular a list of 31 Priority Chemicals developed by EPA. With over 150 partners nationwide, NPEP continues to work with industrial organizations, government agencies, and communities on a wide variety of projects aimed at improving the environment and reducing the risks associated with hazardous chemicals.

Region 6 RCC Innovations

In July 2003, the Corrective Action and Waste Minimization Section began work on pilot projects with Region 6 State agencies. Coordination and communication between our States and EPA Headquarters is a huge part of our work. We are looking for projects that will reduce or recycle wastes, both solid and hazardous.

Region 6 Regulatory Assistance

The Region 6 RCC Team helps facilities work through regulatory issues on proposed waste minimization projects. We coordinate between the facility, the State agency, and EPA Regions and Headquarters offices.
