Swimming on the Munising District

The land around Munising is dotted with many lakes and ponds. This availability of cool, clear water makes swimming very popular during the hot summer days. The Munising Ranger District of the Hiawatha National Forest offers 96 lakes for your use and enjoyment; however, not all of these are ideal for swimming. Many of these picturesque lakes have much bottoms and underdeveloped shorelines where vegetation has grown to the water’s edge.

The sites listed blow have each been developed for swimming and offer clean san beaches, clear water, and plenty of parking. Water is tested every two weeks by the U.S. Forest Service to insure safe swimming.

All swimming should be enjoyed while in the company of another person or while under supervision, because lifeguards are not present at any of these location. Children should be accompanied in the water by an adult at all times.

AuTrain Lake : Located 4 miles south of AuTrain at the AuTrain Lake campground. Conveniences include change-house, drinking water, picnic area, camping area, tables, and toilets.

AuTrain Lake is a popular location not only because of it’s sandy swimming area, but also because of it’s large size. This large size provides you with miles of waterskiing as well as swimming. Water temperatures here will be significantly warmer than that of Lake Superior.

AuTrain Bay : Located on the shore of Lake Superior, 12 miles west of Munising, at the AuTrain junction on M-28. This state-operated site has no beach facilities such as change-house, drinking water, tables, or toilets. There is plenty of parking here, and most needed facilities are available in the nearby town of AuTrain.

Most people here enjoy being able to say that they went swimming in Lake Superior. Because of the extremely cold water temperatures, the thrill of swimming in the northern-most Great Lake is usually limited to short refreshing dips near the mouth of the AuTrain River. Many visitors enjoy the long stretching sand beach that makes this area very popular for activities such as sunbathing, volleyball, and Frisbee.

Pete’s Lake : Located at the Pete’s Lake campground about 10.5 miles south of Wetmore on FH-13. Facilities here include change-house, drinking water, tables, toilets, boat launch, picnic area, camping area, and hiking trail.

This site offers many of the features that one looks for in a family swimming site. The small size of this lake enables it to warm faster than the other lakes. Also the beach slopes gently into Pete’s Lake, thereby providing shallow water for small children.
