Horses on the Hiawatha

Horses are allowed on any trail or road unless otherwise posted

  • Must Tether at least 100 feet from waters' edge
  • No Horses allowed in the Big Island Lake Wilderness or Rock River Canyon Wilderness.

Horse Friendly Campgrounds

Horses are not allowed on any other developed campground or dispersed campsite.

Developed Horse Trails

Pine Marten Run Trail: (Consists of 5 Loop trails)

  • 26 miles of trail - located 30 miles NW of Manistique.
  • Riders must tether their horses at least 100 feet from the edge of any lake or stream.
  • At campsites, temporary hitch rails must be dismantled and manure piles scattered.
  • Trail Heads:
    • Trail Head with Parking & Toilets.
    • Off 2258 & Off 437 (So of 2257).
    • Trail Head with Parking, Toilets, and Drinking Water.
    • Off 440 (between 2258 & 437).
  • Parking at Trail Heads is suitable for Vehicles with Horse Trailers.
  • Camping is permitted throughout the area - (permits are required for camping on Swan Lake, Triangle Lake, Ironjaw Lake & Lake Nineteen).

Bay de Noc-to-Grand Island Trail

  • 40 miles located between 2 mi E. of Rapid River, goes north to Ackerman Lake.
  • 3 Trail Heads: Consist of Parking Lot, Tethering Area, Water Well, & Toilets. Camping is permitted. (Middle area is larger, & quiet location).
    • SOUTH: 2 mi E of Rapid River on CO Rd 509.
    • MIDDLE ASSEMBLY AREA: 16 miles north on CO Rd 509.
    • NORTH: 10 miles SW of Munising on M-94.
    • Tether horse at least 100 feet from water's edge.

Oakwood Trails

  • 11 mile route (flat with occasional gentle hills)
  • Trail Head: Located S side of Hovey Lake on Forest Road 2376C.
