Procedures for the Derivation of Equilibrium Partitioning Sediment Benchmarks (ESBs) for the Protection of Benthic Organisms
This equilibrium partitioning sediment benchmark (ESB) document describes procedures to derive concentrations for 32 nonionic organic chemicals in sediment which are protective of the presence of freshwater and marine benthic organisms.

The Western Airborne Contaminants Assessment Project (WACAP) was initiated to determine the risk from airborne contaminants to ecosystems and food webs in western national parks of the United States. PDF versions of the WACAP final report are now available.

MED Scientists Help Lead Important Effort To Summarize New Generation of Indicators for Coastal Change in Great Lakes
NHEERL's Mid-continent Ecology Division (MED) has collaborated with the STAR-funded Great Lakes Environmental Indicators Project through a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cooperative agreement with the Natural Resources Research Institute at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Revisions to the NHEERL Experimental Toxicology Division Page
NHEERL's Experimental Toxicology Division conducts multidisciplinary research involving several aspects of the risk assessment process. New updates and revisions have just been posted to the division site.

Sediment Toxicity TIE Identification Evaluation (TIE) - Phases I, II, and III Guidance Document (PDF, 145 pp., 1.4 MB)
This document provides guidance for the identification of toxicants in sediments. These methods may be useful as a complement to existing sediment assessment tools.

Monograph of International Symposium on Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms Now Available for Download
The 2005 International Symposium on Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (ISOC-HAB) was co-sponsored by the US EPA, NOAA, FDA, USGS, US ACE, NIH, NIEHS, CDC, USDA, and the UNC-CH IMS. Approximately 100 invited participants from multiple countries and 100 members of the general public participated in the symposium. The monograph of the symposium is now available and may be downloaded in PDF format a chapter at a time. The full document is also available for purchase.

NHEERL Reproductive Toxicology Division Acting Director Sally Perreault Darney is one of the lead authors on a paper reporting results from the Healthy Men Study, a collaborative effort between NHEERL scientists and epidemiologists from the University of North Carolina.

EPA Ranks 3rd Nationally as Best Place To Work for Postdoctoral Fellows
EPA's research campus in Research Triangle Park, N.C., is the third best place for postdoctoral fellows to work, according to a survey by The Scientist magazine. The survey of fellows at EPA includes 35 research institutions in the nation recognized for their exceptional postdoctoral programs.

March 19, 2007:
Ecology Group Makes Big Splash
The Office of Research and Development and the Office of Water of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) produce the National Coastal Condition Report (NCCR), a multiyear series describing the ecological and environmental conditions in U.S. coastal waters. NCCR is in the early phases of its third release.

March 19, 2007:
HSD Scientist elected President of Sigma Xi
Dr. Ann Houston Williams, field studies coordinator for the Epidemiology and Biomarkers Branch of HSD, has been elected president of Sigma Xi, the international honor society of science and engineering. Her election came earlier this month at the society's annual meeting and student research conference, held this year in Detroit.

The Human Studies Division conducts clinical and epidemiological research to improve the understanding of human health risks associated with environmental pollution. This site has recently gone through several major revisions.

David DeMarini Elected President of the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies
"One of my goals, will be to coordinate much of the activities of these societies to get them to better collaborate and work with a whole host of groups to advance environmental mutagen research."

EPA Appoints Director of Duluth Laboratory
Carl Richards, Ph.D. has been appointed Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Mid-Continent Ecology Division (MED) in Duluth, MN.
