Rogers Announces Grants for Tuskegee Airport,
Macon County Planning
Federal Grants Will Improve Airport Safety, Aid Economic Development

Washington, DC  -  U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers congratulated the citizens of Macon County for two federal grants today, the first being a $100,000 grant for Moton Field for safety improvements, and the second totaling $50,000 for a new county comprehensive plan.

Tuskegee’s Moton Field will receive $100,000 to rehabilitate the airport’s rotating beacon, which is currently out of service, as well as update the airport’s layout plan and environmental assessment. These funds, administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation, will improve the airport’s safety and help bring the facility up to new Federal Aviation Administration standards.

Rogers also announced a $50,000 grant to develop a new Comprehensive Plan for Macon County’s unincorporated areas. These funds will provide local officials with basic planning tools necessary to promote and manage community and economic development. The Appalachian Regional Commission administers the grant and provides the funds to the South Central Alabama Development Commission on behalf of Macon County. It is matched by $12,500 in local funds.

“These investments are vital to the long-term economic health of Macon County,” Rogers said. “Our local economy should benefit, and the county’s air transportation infrastructure should soon be in much better shape.”

Both grants follow Congressman Rogers’ recent announcement of $32,000 to update the City of Tuskegee’s downtown Master Plan, an effort which will increase the historic area’s long-term attractiveness to businesses, residents and tourists.
