Washington, DC - U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers congratulated the Town of Shorter today for receiving a $1.23 million grant to upgrade the city’s sewer system.
“A robust public infrastructure is essential to Macon County’s economic well-being,” Rogers said. “I am delighted to see these investments are being made in Shorter, and look forward to working with local officials to help bring more good jobs to the area.”
The grant, administered through the U.S. Department of Commerce, will fund construction of a new wastewater treatment system for Shorter, as well as pay for upgrades to the sewer system’s main lines. Construction of the sewer system is expected to create 300 new jobs, and bring $28 million in new investment to the area.
Total financing for the $1.538 million project is supplemented by $300,000 in local funds. The new sewer system will provide additional capacity for Macon County and Montgomery County businesses supplying the new Hyundai auto plant, as well as upgrade Shorter’s local infrastructure.
