Rogers Announces High Tech Equipment for Russell County
Local law enforcement to receive rescue, video and vision devices

WASHINGTON, D.C.  -  Russell County law enforcement officials should soon have new cutting-edge devices to help fight fires and better protect local citizens, Congressman Mike Rogers said today.

Rogers said four devices, all of which help law enforcement personnel in emergency situations, would be awarded.  The first, known as an AMKUS (gasoline powered), will assist first responders in cutting into automobiles and other vehicles in emergency situations. The equipment is worth $17,167.

Also awarded was a Modular Portable Video System, which is battery powered and assists first responders in performing a variety of inspections, including vehicle cargo and security sweeps. It is worth $7,416.  Thirdly, the Thermovision Scout ZX will allow first responders to collect video at night or in areas where manned surveillance could be unsafe or impractical. The equipment is worth $12,670 each.

Also awarded was an MX-2 Handheld Thermal Imager, which helps law enforcement see at night or in places of low visibility for rescue efforts.  This equipment is worth $15,712.

“These high tech tools should be helpful to local fire and rescue teams,” Rogers said. “I am delighted the federal government has chosen to make these investments locally, and hope these devices will help support the ongoing efforts of Russell County law enforcement.”

Rogers said the departments awarded include: the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. which will receive the AMKUS; the Phenix City Police Department, which will receive the Modular Portable Video System; and the Russell County Sheriff’s Department, which will receive both the Theromovision Scout ZX and MX-2 Handheld Thermal Imager.

Rogers said the devices were awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
