Rogers Sponsors Resolution Honoring
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Says legislation would honor Rosa Parks, recognize 1955-56 protest

Washington, D.C.  -  Congressman Mike Rogers introduced legislation today honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, saying the legislation would help pay tribute to the events which helped start the modern-day Civil Rights movement, and further honor the life and legacy of Rosa Parks.

“Fifty years later our nation still has much to learn from those who dared to challenge the status quo,” Rogers said. “On a day when we mourn the passing of Rosa Parks, it is my hope this resolution will help further highlight the importance of these events and honor the quiet courage of a woman who helped change the world.”

Rogers said H.Con.Res. 273, a resolution honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, was introduced in the House today with 60 co-sponsors, including all members of the Alabama delegation.

The resolution reads, in part, ‘Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives, that Congress recognizes and honors the 50th anniversary of the Montgomery bus boycott, and recognizes the historical significance of the Montgomery bus boycott to the United States.’

“While so much has changed in the fifty years since Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, we must continue to study and learn about these historical events,” Rogers said. “I look forward to leading this effort in the House of Representatives, and thank my colleagues for their strong, bi-partisan support of this resolution.”

Rogers said he hopes the House will debate the resolution before the end of the year, but said its consideration is subject to the Congressional schedule and other pending legislation.
