Transportation & Guiding Services

Because Katmai National Park and Preserve is not accessible by road, the park must be accessed by air taxis or boat. In addition to transportation, commercial guides for various activities such as bear viewing, sport fishing, photography, and hiking also provide services for a fee to the public. Katmai National Monument was created on September 24, 1918 by President Woodrow Wilson to protect features of the 1912 eruption of Novarupta Volcano, which created the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.
