Upcoming Meetings: July 2005 - Seattle, WA

Purpose:

This summer, the US-Japan Cooperative Medical Science Program’s Tuberculosis/Leprosy Panels and Immunology Boards will sponsor two separate meetings in Seattle. The goal of each meeting is to facilitate collaboration between US and Japanese scientists within that discipline. Locating the two meetings in close proximity, however, will allow cross-over attendance and encourage interactions between mycobacteriology and immunology researchers.

23rd Annual Immunology Board Meeting

Specific Meeting Information

Overview:

Immunology is a cross-cutting science of direct relevance to most human diseases and of particular relevance to the development of new vaccines and therapeutics for the infectious diseases targeted by the US-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program. Immunological research continues to generate a wealth of knowledge applicable to the rational design of novel approaches to prevent or cure existing or newly emerging infectious diseases.

Target audience:

  • Immunologists

  • Microbiologists

  • Vaccinologists

  • Product Developers

40th Annual Tuberculosis and Leprosy Panel Conference

Specific Meeting Information

Overview:

The high burden of tuberculosis in the countries of Asia, including Southeast Asia, Korea, India, Pakistan, China and other countries of the Asian Pacific Rim highlights the need for collaborative research efforts and accelerated efforts in product development. In addition, leprosy remains a concern in some regions of Asia. While prevalence of the disease has declined since the roll-out of multi-drug therapy in the 1980’s, the number of new leprosy cases each year has remained virtually unchanged and remains a significant cause of illness and disability in high burden countries, such as Nepal.

Target audience:

  • Immunologists

  • Mycobacterial researchers

  • Product developers

Highlights:

  • 50 internationally recognized experts in TB and leprosy research sharing latest findings in the field

  • Special diagnostics forum

  • Applied and basic research

  • "Meet the Mycobacteria Experts" Breakfast

  • Leprosy Workshop
