Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas

The Moab Field Office has one designated wilderness area (Black Ridge Wilderness Area) totalling 5,200 acres.

There are 11 Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) totalling 349,824 acres in the Moab Field Office.

Non WSA Lands with Wilderness Characteristics Review Findings

1999 Utah Wilderness Inventory and 2003 Revision
The 1999 Utah Wilderness Inventory was conducted by the Bureau of Land Management between 1996 and 1999 to determine whether certain public lands in Utah possess wilderness characteristics.  As a result of public comment and subsequent internal review of inventory files and field evaluations, adjustments were made to the boundaries of wilderness character areas identified in the 1999 inventory. For information about these adjustments please click on the 2003 Revision.  This process identified 22 areas totalling 191,206 acres as having wilderness characteristics

2007 Non WSA Lands with Wilderness Characteristics
During the preparation of this draft RMP, additional analyses of non WSA lands with wilderness characteristics were completed in response to scoping. Twenty five areas were evaluated. Eighteen areas totalling 75,279 acres were found to possess wilderness characteristics. Review findings for all 25 areas are available below.
