Solar Household Energy Demonstration

Washington DC, September 13, 2007: Assistant Secretary Ellen Sauerbrey enjoys a snack cooked on solar cookers at a lunch-time demonstration by Solar Household Energy, Inc. The demonstration in the patio in front of Columbia Plaza attracted many curious folks who enjoyed learning more about this form of cooking from Solar Household Energy, Inc founder and Director, Louise Meyer and volunteer and board member, Pat McArdle. A recently retired Foreign Service officer, Ms. McArdle saw Afghan women cooking with solar energy during an official tour in Afghanistan last year. Pictured in the photo from left to right are Pat McArdle, Ellen Sauerbrey and Louise Meyer. Solar cooking is being used in many countries around the world, particularly in rural areas where traditional fuels are scarce or expensive.
