Strategic Plan

NIAID's biodefense research priorities include basic research; genomics research; the expansion of research infrastructure; and the development of new diagnostics, therapies, and vaccines to protect civilians against potential agents of bioterrorism.

The NIAID Strategic Plan for Biodefense Research, 2007 (PDF) continues to focus on basic research and its application to product development, but also represents a shift toward a more flexible, broad spectrum approach.

This plan also outlines the need for new countermeasures that are effective against a broad-spectrum of pathogens and toxins. NIAID’s plan reflects the Institute’s partnerships with the Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise (PHEMCE) and the Department of Homeland Security.
