The Friday, October 11, 2002, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contains a study titled "Usual Sources of Cigarettes for Middle and High School Students—Texas, 1998–1999." According to the study, among students in Texas, cigarette theft and using older acquaintances to purchase cigarettes are becoming increasingly common. The illegal sale of cigarettes to minors however, is becoming less common. In Texas, the illegal sale rate to minors decreased from 24% in 1998 to 13 % in 1999.
