Activities 2008:

Arizona

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) TB Control Program will be hosting a brownbag lecture on World TB Day, Monday, March 24, 2008. The lecture will take place at ADHS in the 4th Floor Training Room - ADHS Building 150. The public is welcome.

Dr. Karen Lewis, State TB Control Officer will be presenting on Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) in Arizona and Dr. Melanie Taylor, Medical Director for the Office of HIV, STD and Hepatitis C Services will be presenting on the Treatment Challenges in TB/HIV Patients. Arkansas

In honor of World TB Day, Dr. Iram Bakhatawar presented a program to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and others in the medical profession regarding the treatment and elimination of TB, current trends, and statistics.  This program was presented during the regular Chest Conference.

California

World TB Day is celebrated within our facility with a strong focus in recognizing the achievements and continued efforts that have taken place in the U.S. and throughout the world to eradicate this disease. In recognition, we host an all-day event in our employee cafeteria. The event features educational games focusing on the current treatments and prevention of TB; education about TB in the health care environment and working safely with TB patients; TB videos; educational materials on the importance of treatment, compliance, and potential hazards with TB drugs; and awareness-raising of global and domestic TB issues. There will be chances to win prizes. Refreshments will be served.

The World TB Day Forum is intended to engage community leaders in Los Angeles County in an effort to educate them about the risk of TB and what they can do to combat TB in their communities. Community leaders include, but are not limited to, those from the religious community, businesses, local government, health care providers, and leaders of local community and cultural groups. By engaging and informing local community leaders, they will then be able to take back important health information to their communities and can take an active role in TB education and prevention.

Thursday March 13th, statewide media call 10:30-11:30, moderated by the American Lung Association of California’s (ALAC) Communications Vice President, Andy Weisser, with four featured speakers: among them Barbara Cole, CTCA President Elect and an ALAC L.A. staff member whose father died of MDR TB.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health TB Control Program and TB Coalition Partners host pre-World TB Day Forum, with Keynote Speaker State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas, revealing common high risk community TB misconceptions.

Monday March 24th, San Francisco International Airport Museum Library media event 10 AM PT. Bay Area TB Control Programs will highlight the importance of strong TB Control programs throughout California to identify and contain TB, advancements in diagnostic tools and drugs to treat TB, and a strengthened investment in International TB Control.

Florida Bureau of TB and Refugee Health

March 21st, 10:00 AM: To raise awareness about Tuberculosis in Florida, 88.9 WFSU radio in Tallahassee will interview Jim Cobb, Chief, Bureau of TB and Refugee Health; Max Salfinger, M.D., Chief, Bureau of Laboratories, and Brenda Olsen, R.N., CEO of American Lung Association of the Southeast. 2) Monday, March 24th, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM: Lunch and Learn with Michael Lauzardo, M.D., M.Sc., “Beyond Resistance.” Dr. Lauzardo, Principal Investigator for the Southeastern National TB Center, will provide an informative presentation on drug resistant forms of TB. The Florida State Surgeon General, Ana Viamonte-Ros, M.D, M.P.H. will open the program at 11:30 AM. 3.) World TB Day Trivia. Beginning Tuesday, March 18, Department of Health employees are encouraged to participate. All four DOH buildings have a poster in the lobby with a series of TB questions. People are invited to fill out a card with answers to the questions, name and e-mail address for a prize drawing. Answers will be posted on Monday, March 24th.

Palm Beach County Health Department

The Palm Beach County Health Department will be collaborating with the Palanca Food Pantry, a ministry of Holy Redeemer Episcopal Church and their partners, St. Rita’s Catholic Church, to provide educational information and health screenings to the homeless, working poor, disabled, and retired populations in Palm Beach County.

Illinois

The Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago will host a day-long event on March 24 featuring panel discussions and presentations. Topics include “Unsung Heroes”; “History and Futures of Sanitariums; “Immigration & TB, TB Patients Traveling the World, Bi-National Card B1& B2 Status”; “2007 Stats Review”; and “Global TB Update” There will also be an awards ceremony, prizes, and entertainment.

Kansas

WTBD Packets

The state TB Control Program mailed 107 packets of information out to local health departments encouraging local participation in World TB Day. The packets included a variety of CDC and WHO materials designed to educate and encourage participation. Media packets were included as well as this notification form. A message from the State TB Controller encouraged each local community to consider something they could do in their area that was comfortable to them. Those with little or no past experience were encouraged to simply take the opportunity to do some one on one sharing of the impact of TB in Kansas, while those with more experience and resources were encouraged to develop larger educational and awareness events that will attract larger audiences. All areas have been encouraged to notify the state office of whatever event or activity they choose to do.

The Wide, Wide World of TB…intersecting with HIV

The Wide, Wide World of TB…intersecting with HIV is the title of this annual Kansas City World TB Day awareness conference. Tuberculosis issues from around the world have an effect here in the Midwest United States. In recent years, more than 60% of the active tuberculosis cases diagnosed by Kansas were among foreign-born individuals who recently came into this country. Missouri has seen a shift from around 25% of all TB cases in 2004 to nearly 50% of all TB cases in 2006 diagnosed in individuals born outside of the U.S. This workshop is designed to expose participants to the many challenges facing the tuberculosis control efforts of the Midwest. Registration is $25 due by March 7, 2008 and includes continental breakfast, lunch, and continuing education credits. The Wide, Wide World of TB: Intersecting with HIV - Registration Website.

Proclamation

A proclamation is being signed by the Governor declaring March 24, 2008 as World TB Day of Awareness in Kansas.

Old Disease...New Approaches

Old Disease…New Approaches is the title of this annual Wichita World TB Day awareness conference. Tuberculosis issues continue to evolve and have momentous impact here in Kansas. This workshop is designed to expose the participants to the many challenges facing the tuberculosis control efforts of Kansas and some of the new approaches to managing these challenges that have been implemented. Registration is $25 due by April 17, 2008 and includes continental breakfast, lunch, and continuing education credits. Register for Old Disease…New Approaches is the title of this annual Wichita World TB Day awareness conference.

Michigan

To raise awareness, Michigan’s TB Program staff, in collaboration with the American Lung Association of Michigan and the Michigan Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Tuberculosis, will have a display at the Michigan Capitol building the week of March 17. This display includes posters that highlight current TB trends and control efforts in Michigan, as well as historical information and memorabilia. Brochures will be available for the public.

To highlight World TB Day, Michigan’s TB Program staff, in collaboration with the American Lung Association of Michigan and the Michigan Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Tuberculosis, will host an open house event. Historical memorabilia as well as present day TB control information will be on display. This event also includes a meet-the-press session featuring Dr. James Sunstrum, Michigan’s TB Medical Consultant.

Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Health’s TB Prevention and Control Program will be sending a letter to local public health agencies and community partners encouraging them to sponsor activities for World TB Day 2008.

Staff from the Minnesota Department of Health TB Prevention and Control Program and the Hennepin County Public Health Clinic will be presenting a TB lecture to English Language Learners.

The Minnesota Department of Health TB Prevention and Control Program World TB Day 2008.

The Minnesota Department of Health Refugee Health and TB Prevention and Control Programs will be sponsoring 20-minute episodes about TB in six languages (Hmong, Khmer, Lao, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese) on the ECHO-TV (Emergency & Community Health Outreach) program. TPT Channel 17 will broadcast the episodes. More information is available on the ECHO TV Webpage

Staff from the Minnesota Department of Health’s TB Prevention and Control Program will be appearing on a Minneapolis-based Somali-language radio show to discuss TB.

The Minnesota Department of Health TB Prevention and Control Program submitted an article about TB to ethnic newspapers in Minnesota for publication in March 2008.

World TB Day will kick off “Let’s Cover the Cough” Respiratory Health Awareness Week focusing on tuberculosis, asthma, and smoking cessation.  After a mayoral proclamation, Dr. Max Salfinger will give the keynote presentation “Professor Koch, I Have a Feeling We Are Not in Kansas Anymore!” and the evening will feature a reading of the play “KOCH” by Dr. Elmer Koneman (author). Activities include interaction with the local public school system (including ESL students) by medical, nursing and allied health faculty, and students.  Other activities include clinical microbiology and infectious disease rounds. Slogans in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Somali will be placed on the local buses.

Nevada

Medical Potpourri: “Critical Reflections on Evidence, Effectiveness and Ethics in the Management of Tuberculosis” by Diane Freedman, RN, PHN, TB Coordinator, Washoe County District Health Department & Craig Klugman, PhD, Professor of Ethics at the University of Nevada-Reno

• Prevalence of TB in Nevada and definitions of patients who are most at risk for contracting the disease
• Description of current treatments of TB and required screening, reporting and isolation requirements for TB in the State of Nevada
• Discussion of the ethical dilemmas of choosing between the non-compliant patient’s personal liberties vs. the need to protect the public health

New Jersey

The New Jersey Medical Global Tuberculosis Institute will be holding our bimonthly Web-Based TB Grand Rounds for TB program medical consultants in the Northeastern region of the United States. These sessions provide an opportunity for medical consultants to present challenging cases and receive feedback from their colleagues and other TB experts. Our guest speaker, Dr. Michael Iseman, will present a case of drug resistant TB.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey is pleased to announce the first annual Reynard J. McDonald World TB Day Lecture. A grateful patient of Dr. Reynard J. McDonald, Medical Director of the New Jersey Medical School Global Tuberculosis Institute, has endowed an annual World TB Day lecture in his name to be given at Medical Grand Rounds. Dr. Michael Iseman, who did his pulmonary training at Harlem Hospital along with Dr. McDonald, will be the first lecturer. 

The Bergen County Department of Health Services, TB Control Program, will host a World TB Day event on Friday, April 18. Mark Wolman, Program Manager, New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) Global Tuberculosis Institute, will present "Tuberculosis: Global to Local" and Lillian Pirog, Nurse Manager, NJMS Global Tuberculosis Institute, will present "Fundamentals of Tuberculosis: Nursing in Children and Adolescents." In addition, two workshops will be presented on reading tuberculin skin tests and the use of N-95 masks. A variety of displays and posters about TB will also be available for viewing.

New York

In commemoration of World TB Day, March 24, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH), Bureau of Tuberculosis Control will:

• Host the 2008 Annual TB Conference entitled “I Can Stop TB”. This year’s conference will discuss the impact of immigration on tuberculosis from a historical perspective, recent developments in the use of the QuantiFERON TB-Gold test, anti-TB drugs currently in development and the current gaps in TB research and development, ongoing challenges of TB transmission within a particular community and new clinical policies and procedures for infection control practices and the diagnosis and treatment of active TB disease and latent TB infection.
• Issue a press release, collaborate with the Coalition for a TB-Free NYC to host the 2^nd Annual Community TB Forum “I Am Stopping TB” and distribute TB information kits and education materials to community leaders and at-risk communities.
   

The Coalition for a TB-Free NYC (led by RESULTS, American Lung Association of the City of New York, Center for Immigrant Health, Charles P. Felton National Tuberculosis Center at Harlem Hospital Center, Treatment Action Group, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, New York State Department of Health) is hosting the 2^nd Annual Community TB Forum “I Am Stopping TB” as a way to reach out to community leaders and service providers serving populations at high-risk for TB. This year’s forum will address the facts about tuberculosis, engage providers to share success stories on fighting TB and develop strategies to Stop TB in their community.

North Dakota

On World TB Day 2008, the North Dakota Department of Health TB program will publish a news release highlighting the importance of TB awareness. The news release will contain TB statistics for North Dakota, the nation, and the world. It will outline the risk factors associated with TB, and provide information on testing and treatment. Finally, the news release will describe the current efforts for TB elimination in North Dakota.

Ohio

3rd Annual World TB Day Conference

This year, the Ohio Department of Health, in collaboration with the Ohio TB Coalition, will host the 3rd Annual World TB Day Conference. The conference will be held Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Ohio State University Biomedical Research Tower. This all-day event will provide a historical view of TB along with present-day issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in Ohio.

Texas

Stop TB Southeast Texas Region will hold a World TB Day event. The agenda will include presentations by state, regional and local TB experts, representatives from government agencies, Results International, testimony from a former TB patient, and a surprise honor ceremony for exceptional long-term service to the public health TB community for three special guests.

In addition, an announcement to the community on the grand opening of Langston House; a seven room housing unit for infectious TB patients that may be displaced or homeless.

San Antonio, Texas

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is improving its capacity to efficiently and accurately screen tuberculosis (TB). Observance of World TB Day on Monday, March 24 includes a program detailing The Face of Tuberculosis in Texas. The event is from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Central Library Auditorium, 600 Soledad. Dr. Fernando Guerra, Director of Health, will provide opening remarks, which will inform stakeholders and the public about TB’s impact on our community and the state. Staff will demonstrate the QuantiFERON-TB (QFT) Gold In-Tube test.

Austin, Texas

An educational opportunity is being held to raise awareness of the epidemiology of tuberculosis control and prevention in Texas and along the Texas - Mexico border.  Information will be presented about the challenges of drug resistance and the impact of tuberculosis in children, the African American community, and foreign-born populations.  The costs of tuberculosis, how research can make a difference, and the role of the laboratory will be explored.  The day will finish with presentations related to the Tuberculosis Photovoice project, the Binational Alliance for Tuberculosis, and breaking down barriers to TB prevention and control.

Washington

On March 24, 2008, members of the community are welcome to participate in a forum focused on increasing public awareness and dialogue regarding TB. The evening will commence with student-lead activities, leading into a panel-led discussion (including interested parties knowledgeable in the topic of TB) with the public. The moderator will pose questions to the panel that will promote audience questions and will address the financial, cultural, and global commerce/trade issues relevant to the epidemic. In addition, proclamations will be submitted from State, County, and City representatives for declaration of World TB Day.

The Snohomish County RESULTS group and the Snohomish Health District invite you and your friends to a free, public event of song and stories dedicated to those affected by TB. International Activities

World TB Day in Salah ad Din Province, Iraq. CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding and colleagues at the Salah ad Din tuberculosis clinic in Tikrit on March 22.

Russian Federation

The World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Programme in the Russian Federation will host a press conference on March 23 to raise awareness about TB and World TB Day activities. During the press conference, winners of the journalists’ contest for excellence in reporting TB-related issues during 2007 and winners of the 2007 poster contest will be announced. Journalists will be called to participate in next year’s contest.

The World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Programme in the Russian Federation will conduct a TB poster contest among school students to attract attention of children and teenagers to the problem of TB. The World TB Day Organizing Committee will select the best posters in two categories and invite winners to the press conference for the awarding ceremony. Selected posters will be presented to the general public at various exhibitions and will be published.

Experts of the World Health Organization TB Control Programme in the Russian Federation and national counterparts are to participate in a number of TV and radio programs to increase awareness about TB and World TB Day. Video materials will be distributed among TV channels for broadcasting.

The World Health Organization TB Control Programme in the Russian Federation will host a scientific conference for medical students and research fellows aimed to spark interest in TB research and encourage students to pursue careers in TB control. The objectives of the conference include raising the interest of medical students, young researchers, and doctors to conduct research in the field of physiopulmonology; improving the quality of TB research; identifying the most talented medical students; and awarding young researchers participating in the development and implementation of new methods of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of TB.
