The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) TB Control Program will be hosting a brownbag lecture on World TB Day, Monday, March 24, 2008. The lecture will take place at ADHS in the 4th Floor Training Room - ADHS Building 150. The public is welcome.

Dr. Karen Lewis, State TB Control Officer will be presenting on Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) in Arizona and Dr. Melanie Taylor, Medical Director for the Office of HIV, STD and Hepatitis C Services will be presenting on the Treatment Challenges in TB/HIV Patients. California

World TB Day is celebrated within our facility with a strong focus in recognizing the achievements and continued efforts that have taken place in the U.S. and throughout the world to eradicate this disease. In recognition, we host an all-day event in our employee cafeteria. The event features educational games focusing on the current treatments and prevention of TB; education about TB in the health care environment and working safely with TB patients; TB videos; educational materials on the importance of treatment, compliance, and potential hazards with TB drugs; and awareness-raising of global and domestic TB issues. There will be chances to win prizes. Refreshments will be served.

The World TB Day Forum is intended to engage community leaders in Los Angeles County in an effort to educate them about the risk of TB and what they can do to combat TB in their communities. Community leaders include, but are not limited to, those from the religious community, businesses, local government, health care providers, and leaders of local community and cultural groups. By engaging and informing local community leaders, they will then be able to take back important health information to their communities and can take an active role in TB education and prevention.

Florida Bureau of TB and Refugee Health

March 21st, 10:00 AM: To raise awareness about Tuberculosis in Florida, 88.9 WFSU radio in Tallahassee will interview Jim Cobb, Chief, Bureau of TB and Refugee Health; Max Salfinger, M.D., Chief, Bureau of Laboratories, and Brenda Olsen, R.N., CEO of American Lung Association of the Southeast. 2) Monday, March 24th, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM: Lunch and Learn with Michael Lauzardo, M.D., M.Sc., “Beyond Resistance.” Dr. Lauzardo, Principal Investigator for the Southeastern National TB Center, will provide an informative presentation on drug resistant forms of TB. The Florida State Surgeon General, Ana Viamonte-Ros, M.D, M.P.H. will open the program at 11:30 AM. 3.) World TB Day Trivia. Beginning Tuesday, March 18, Department of Health employees are encouraged to participate. All four DOH buildings have a poster in the lobby with a series of TB questions. People are invited to fill out a card with answers to the questions, name and e-mail address for a prize drawing. Answers will be posted on Monday, March 24th.

Kansas

WTBD Packets

The state TB Control Program mailed 107 packets of information out to local health departments encouraging local participation in World TB Day. The packets included a variety of CDC and WHO materials designed to educate and encourage participation. Media packets were included as well as this notification form. A message from the State TB Controller encouraged each local community to consider something they could do in their area that was comfortable to them. Those with little or no past experience were encouraged to simply take the opportunity to do some one on one sharing of the impact of TB in Kansas, while those with more experience and resources were encouraged to develop larger educational and awareness events that will attract larger audiences. All areas have been encouraged to notify the state office of whatever event or activity they choose to do.

The Wide, Wide World of TB…intersecting with HIV

The Wide, Wide World of TB…intersecting with HIV is the title of this annual Kansas City World TB Day awareness conference. Tuberculosis issues from around the world have an effect here in the Midwest United States. In recent years, more than 60% of the active tuberculosis cases diagnosed by Kansas were among foreign-born individuals who recently came into this country. Missouri has seen a shift from around 25% of all TB cases in 2004 to nearly 50% of all TB cases in 2006 diagnosed in individuals born outside of the U.S. This workshop is designed to expose participants to the many challenges facing the tuberculosis control efforts of the Midwest. World TB Day will kick off “Let’s Cover the Cough” Respiratory Health Awareness Week focusing on tuberculosis, asthma, and smoking cessation.  After a mayoral proclamation, Dr. Max Salfinger will give the keynote presentation “Professor Koch, I Have a Feeling We Are Not in Kansas Anymore!” and the evening will feature a reading of the play “KOCH” by Dr. Elmer Koneman (author). Activities include interaction with the local public school system (including ESL students) by medical, nursing and allied health faculty, and students.  Other activities include clinical microbiology and infectious disease rounds. Slogans in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Somali will be placed on the local buses.

New Jersey

New York

In commemoration of World TB Day, March 24, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH), Bureau of Tuberculosis Control will:

  • Host the 2008 Annual TB Conference entitled “I Can Stop TB”. This year’s conference will discuss the impact of immigration on tuberculosis from a historical perspective, recent developments in the use of the QuantiFERON TB-Gold test, anti-TB drugs currently in development and the current gaps in TB research and development, ongoing challenges of TB transmission within a particular community and new clinical policies and procedures for infection control practices and the diagnosis and treatment of active TB disease and latent TB infection.

North Dakota

On World TB Day 2008, the North Dakota Department of Health TB program will publish a news release highlighting the importance of TB awareness. The news release will contain TB statistics for North Dakota, the nation, and the world. It will outline the risk factors associated with TB, and provide information on testing and treatment. Finally, the news release will describe the current efforts for TB elimination in North Dakota.

3rd Annual World TB Day Conference

This year, the Ohio Department of Health, in collaboration with the Ohio TB Coalition, will host the 3rd Annual World TB Day Conference. The conference will be held Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Ohio State University Biomedical Research Tower. This all-day event will provide a historical view of TB along with present-day issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in Ohio.

Stop TB Southeast Texas Region will hold a World TB Day event. The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is improving its capacity to efficiently and accurately screen tuberculosis (TB). Observance of World TB Day on Monday, March 24 includes a program detailing The Face of Tuberculosis in Texas. The event is from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Central Library Auditorium, 600 Soledad. Dr. Fernando Guerra, Director of Health, will provide opening remarks, which will inform stakeholders and the public about TB’s impact on our community and the state. Staff will demonstrate the QuantiFERON-TB (QFT) Gold In-Tube test.

An educational opportunity is being held to raise awareness of the epidemiology of tuberculosis control and prevention in Texas and along the Texas - Mexico border.  Information will be presented about the challenges of drug resistance and the impact of tuberculosis in children, the African American community, and foreign-born populations.  The costs of tuberculosis, how research can make a difference, and the role of the laboratory will be explored.  The day will finish with presentations related to the Tuberculosis Photovoice project, the Binational Alliance for Tuberculosis, and breaking down barriers to TB prevention and control.

The World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Programme in the Russian Federation will host a press conference on March 23 to raise awareness about TB and World TB Day activities. During the press conference, winners of the journalists’ contest for excellence in reporting TB-related issues during 2007 and winners of the 2007 poster contest will be announced. Journalists will be called to participate in next year’s contest.
