Hi Shirley,

This is Terry Kinzel from Washington State.  We use EFF in our ESL classrooms and have used a very simple strategy to introduce the wheel to non-English speaking learners.  The instructor might have the skill translated for understanding and then have the learners go through magazines and other print materials and have them cut out visual examples of their understanding of the skill.  Learners work together in small groups and create their own wheel pasting on the example to explain the concept along with the English words.  It has worked very well for us and created a clear understanding of the skills we are working on from the beginning.

I am working with a group of 8 programs in Maine this year.  All of the
programs are implementing EFF into their classrooms and programs.  Two of
the teachers work with very low ESL learners.  They have asked for ideas
using pictures to link to the EFF Framework.  Are there any ideas out there
that I might give to them?  Their learners are virtually non-English
speakers.

I have noticed recent discussion regarding ESL and EFF. Since many of =

highlight two articles that specifically address ESL classrooms.

EFF in a Family Literacy Classroom (pages 7 - 9) focuses on a mixed ESL =
class. KT Lund, teacher from Central Oregon Community College =
illustrates how she used The EFF Standard Speak So Others Can Understand =
to design a learning activity.

Terry Kinzel, from Big Bend Community College explains how her teachers =
used the EFF Framework with ESL students in the article EFF Links =
Washington's Families That Work Initiative (pages 12 - 13).
