I would then move into the "what" (receptive vs. productive) and the = "how" by introducing language learning strategies which are key components to all of these standards (and an area we too = often neglect in low level ESOL classes). I've always found that once students understand the process of learning = a language, they can take more ownership of it and bring order to the = chaos. They can then more easily scaffold, build on or construct their = learning. It also becomes easier for them to track or assess their = learning. The role maps help here too by having students think about = what kinds of language they need and use. I hope that helps.
