MEADE COUNTY MAN SENTENCED FOR STEALING FUEL AND OTHER ITEMS FROM FORT KNOX
– Took advantage of his civilian position as a vehicle fueller

LOUISVILLE, KY - Nevitt Laroy Benham, age 50, of Meade County, was sentenced to 2 years probation in United States District Court, Louisville, Kentucky, for stealing 225 gallons of jet (JP8) fuel and other items from the Army at the Fort Knox Military Installation, U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky announced today. Thomas B. Russell, Judge, United States District Court, also imposed a fine of $250.

Benham had plead guilty on June 10, 2008, to taking advantage of his position as a civilian employee at Fort Knox. Benham’s duties included fueling military vehicles, when he stole tarpaulins and batteries for Army tanks, lubricants, oil, and prepackaged meals called “Meals Ready to Eat” or “MREs.” The offense took place between February and June of 2007, and while Benham attempted to avoid a felony conviction by arguing the stolen items had no value, testimony established the value of the items at well over $1,000.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Christopher C. Cross, and it was investigated by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Division.
