FEDERAL JURY RETURNS GUILTY VERDICT ON FIREARMS CHARGE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JEFFERSON DANIELS, age 31, a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, was convicted by a federal jury sitting in New Orleans of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

DANIELS was charged with this crime by a Federal Grand Jury on April 10, 2008. The defendant faces a maximum penalty of ten (10) years of imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, three (3) years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. Sentencing is scheduled to take place before the Honorable Sarah Vance on November 12, 2008.

JEFFERSON DANIELS had been arrested on March 28, 2008 by the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office after a traffic stop on Interstate I-55 in Tangipahoa Parish. A voluntary search of the vehicle yielded a Ruger 9mm, model P95 pistil, fully loaded, in the defendant’s luggage. The defendant had previously had been convicted in Hamilton County in the State of Ohio for cocaine possession and was prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency and Officers of the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office. This prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Christopher Cox and Edward J. Rivera.
