MAN SENTENCED IN FEDERAL COURT FOR CONSPIRACY TO BRIBE A PUBLIC OFFICIAL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JHONA JAQUES VAZ, age 47, a resident of Senegal; was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt to 18 month of imprisonment and following this term of imprisonment for Conspiracy to Bribe a Public Official and he was sentenced to 3 years of supervised release, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

JHONA JAQUES VAZ previously pled guilty on April 2, 2008 before U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt to Conspiracy to Bribe a Public Official. LOUIS GOMIS and JHONA JAQUES VAZ conspired to bribe an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent working in an undercover capacity to secure BERNARD GOMIS’ release from custody. The conspiracy resulted in a $7,000.00 payment by JHONA JAQUES VAZ to bribe a public official to secure the release of BERNARD GOMIS. LOUIS GOMIS previously was sentenced on July 30, 2008 to 18 months of imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release following this term of imprisonment.

The Court imposed a sentence within the recommended guidelines. JHONA JAQUES VAZ is scheduled to report to the Bureau of Prisons on December 15, 2008.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Immigration & Customs Enforcement.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Brian J. Capitelli.
