HARVEY MAN INDICTED FOR TAX FRAUD

July 10, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CURTIS L. ROBERTSON, age 59, a resident of Harvey, Louisiana, was charged in a ten-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for tax fraud, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

The indictment charges ROBERTSON with preparing and filing fraudulent tax returns with
the Internal Revenue Service, in order to obtain fraudulent tax refunds. The tax returns were fraudulent in that they contained false dependents, income, or addresses. When ROBERTSON manipulated the income and dependent information, he then qualified the tax returns for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a refundable tax credit for low-income, working taxpayers and the amount of the credit is based on income, filing status and number of qualifying children, if any. The false income and the false dependent information, along with the credit from the EITC, would then make these fraudulent returns eligible for tax refunds to which the alleged taxpayers were not entitled.

ROBERTSON faces up to five (5) years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 as to each of the ten counts. Letten reiterated that the bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri.
