LOCAL WOMAN INDICTED FOR HURRICANE KATRINA RELATED FRAUD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DIANE STAFFORD, age 51, a resident of Poydras, Louisiana, was charged in a two-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for theft of public money and theft from an employee pension plan, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

If convicted, STAFFORD faces a maximum term of imprisonment of fifteen (15) years, a fine of $500,000 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General and the Veterans Administration, Office of Inspector General.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Julia K. Evans.
