ILLEGAL ALIEN SENTENCED TO SIX MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABEL RIVERA CORTES, age 25, a resident of Mexico, was sentenced by U. S. District Judge Jay Zainey to six (6) months in imprisonment with credit for time served, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, on November 5, 2007, ABEL RIVERA CORTES was in possession of a counterfeit Alien Registration Card when he was found in Orleans Parish. The defendant was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 14,2007 and subsequently pled guilty to one count of possession of a counterfeit Alien Registration Card before Judge Jay Zainey. He will be deported to Mexico after serving his sentence.

The case was investigated by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney W. Scott Laragy.
